PostSubject: Tonic Trouble- Nintendo 64   Tonic Trouble- Nintendo 64 EmptySat Jan 15, 2011 7:51 pm

Alright, I'm here to review my all time favorite game on the N64; Tonic Trouble. This game was developed by Ubisoft, the creators of Rayman. and more recently known for the Assassin's Creed series. It was released in North America on August 31, 1999. The story follows the main character, Ed the Spaceship Janitor, after he accidentaly spills a magic potion on the Earth, causeing all vegetable life to become living killers. The magic potion is then found by the main Antagonist, Grögh. He notices the drink’s mutagenic properties when it transforms the surrounding environment; when he drinks it, he is pleased with the results, It gives him magic powers and allows him to take over the world. When Ed’s superiors find out what happened and discover that it was Ed’s fault, he is ordered to clean up the mess he made.
Now that the story is outta the way, lets talk about the genre and controls. Its a simple platformer, similar to Rayman and Mario 64. I find that the controls are sometimes lacking, meaning a slight tune-up and tighten would make them ver close to perfect. Sometimes the direction Ed moves in can be sporadic, so a careful command of the joystick will fix that. One upgrade transforms your Bowtie into a Glider is you hit A while in the air. The flying controls arn't much different from the controls of the Flying Cap in Mario 64. And if you hit Z while gliding, the Bowtie turns into a parachute, which allows you to change directions easier. This addition makes the flying work well, because they are sometimes uncooperative. Now let's talk about the water controls. Very, very simple and effective. In the water, the control stick is to swim atop the water. That's it. No tapping A to swim. And when underwater, you hold the R button and use the control stick, and if you let go of R, you hover in place. This simplicity really goes against the sometimes lacking water controls found in many, many Nintendo 64 titles, such as Banjoo-Kazoie and Ocarina of Time. The controls in this game are very good, in my opinion.
Let's talk about the Levels, Enemies, and Music/Sound. There are 9 levels in the N64 version, and they're very diverse in design. One of my favorite levels in the Vegitable HQ, where all the evil vegitables live and plot against Ed. It's the first level, and it's rather linear. But then you get near the end, and the levels become a little less linear. The difficulty has a steady increase, and at no point did I feel like the levels were geting crazy or ridiculous. In every level, there are 6 items you're supposed to collect to progress the story. And there are also many collectables, such as Antidotes, Thermometers, Extra Lives, etc. I believe that this works very well for the game, because it really makes you feel rewarded when you complete a section of a level. The collest part about these levels is that they're all connected by a main Hub-world, in which you must return to after each level to get the new upgrade, which in turn allows you to access the next level. The enemies are also very diverse, from Vegitables, to Robotic-Suitcases, to Bionic Ducks, and the list goes on. Fighting these enemies is a breeze, as all of them can either be dispatched with your trusty stick or blowgun. The AI is lacking though, and you'll kill enemies with no problem once you get used to the control scheme. The music in this game is very catchy, it has a lot of Slap-Bass and percussion. The sounds very much fit the environments, and I think they portray the game perfectly.
Let's rap this bad boy up with some talk about graphics. The graphics are nothing special I suppose. Looking at it isn't really an amazng experience. They're overall okay. But the style itself is very very interesting. It's, waht I would call, a controlled sort of expressional form (I'm going to art school after highschool, so thats how I can make observations like that). This games holds a lot of nostalga for me, and I think it's a solid platformer. If you get a chance, please try this game out, it doens't nearly get the plays it deserves.

Thing about reviews batman, nobody will read them unless they are interested in that specific game before hand. And since Tonic Trouble is fairly obscure...I think you get my point.
