| Okay, so I haven't played a Pokemon game in FOREVER. Like, at least half a century. The thought of playing one again is exciting, but I've no idea where to start. I have no idea what to play. A DS game is out of the question, and Pokemon as a whole has been out of my mind this whole year.
I know Pokemon is an integral part of this forum, and I wanna get caught up in all of it again.
Under your guys' advice, what game should I play to ease myself back into the Pokemon universe?

| Well, were I you I would try to just play them in order. Also, DS games are out the question for what reason? | |

| I think you should start with Gen 2 (Gold, Silver, Crystal), because they've aged slightly better than Gen 1 (Red, Blue, Yellow).
And also, why no DS games? Gen 5 (Black, White) and even Gen 4 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum) are really solid.

| I'd go Fire Red/Leaf Green or Emerald. | |

| DS is pretty damn messed up, but I suppose it COULD work. Gen IV didn't excite me, but it's been a while, so if I find a good emulator or if by some miracle my DS works I'll give it a try. I just kinda want to take it slow, I don't remember practically anything. Something simple like red/blue might be good (I have both), but my Gold broke! It doesn't save well anymore. | |

| Well, like I said, I think you should just work through the series from start to finish as best you can. That way you see the evolution of programming, gameplay, style and tactics as anybody else would have. Plus, playing the first games allows you to appreciate the later, better programmed games. | |

Good points, and I agree. They're not terribly long games either.

| I agree with Hekeshi, play through the games in order. Red/blue may be a but painful, because, although those games are a huge part of my childhood, they aged very poorly and werent well programmed to be honest. Second gen and on are great though.
As for you not wanting to do the DS games, I really reccomend it, they are the best in the series in many ways. To be honest, I wasn't too excited for White when it came out, especially compared to how excited I've always eenfor Pokemon, but I'll tel you, I've never gone through 40 hours so fast in my life.

| It's not so much of my dislike for IV gen (I can't judge it right now seeing as it's been a loooooong time) but rather the disfunctionality(?) of my ds. | |

| Yeah, if you really want to keep getting into Pokemon you may need to find a functioning DS. That'll be the only way to see just how much the series has grown and improved. | |

| Of the DS Pokemon games, I'd say D/P are the weakest, with Plat being better, if only slightly, then HG/SS and B/W are both pretty good. | |

| So, I'm currently at Victory Road (?) in Ruby. I'm unfortunately under-leveled, but I didn't use Groudon for any battles so far. I kept Ralts (Colby) from evolving until 28, so that's a non-wasted psychic TM. I chose to evolve it solely to increase HP. Which may or may not be true. (I couldn't check, I was in Mexico this past week) | |
